Letters to Benjamin Watkins Leigh from Henry Clay and Francis Johnson [manuscript] 1820-1844.

Several letters, 1820-18xx deal with Clay's successful attempt to reclaim his father's plantation "Euphraim" in Henrico County, Va. A letter 1822 Dec 10, from Francis Johnson, confirms the appointment of Clary as a c0mmissioner. A letter 1823 October 20, speculates that John Quincy Adams will be elected president and notes that Andrew Jackson, who has changed his personal conduct, has been elected to the Senate. In a letter 1834 October 22, Clay incorrectly reports that James Findlay has been elected governor of Ohio and rejoices that several Jackson men have lost seats to Whigs. In a letter, 1839 September 25, Clay discloses that William Henry Harrison expects the nominaton, discusses election prospects in several states, expensive internal improvements and the inconsistency of Jacksonian democrats. In a letter 1843 March 17, Clay describes his "Southern jaunt," and discusses his prospects of winning the presidency. Clay tells Leigh that he "heartily concurs" with the address of the Whig convention in Virginia to the people. He states that the "brief notice with which Mr. Tyler is treated in the address was wise." Clay says there is an omission in the address that he regrets; that is, "Executive power & the veto." In a letter 1843 June 20 Clay inquires "into the origin of Mr. Wise's alienation and his present enmity" towards Clay and speculates more on the election. Letters, 1844 July 3 and 20, enclose copies of his letters to Francis P. Blair (not present) and lists his objection to their publication particiularly as he alludes to an infirmity of John Quincy Adams. Clay has not "received all the proof I expect to establish 'bargain intrigue & corruption,' upon [Andrew] Jackson and his friends. He closes with comments on the political situation in Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina and Kentucky. .
